88 voyager van smokes at slow speeds, when idling and backing. ive been told its probably the valve stems, but that if i get a valve job, the increased compression would cause other parts such as the pistons to wear out faster. t or f? if true, should i not worry about the smoke and drive it till it dies?

whats it got for miles..... the way i usually figure it is a quart of oil is sometimes cheaper than an overhaul if you dont expect the car to last more than another year
