I have an intermittent starting problem. The last few mornings, and on a couple of other occasions, the car sounds like it has a dead battery (just groans) when I turn the ignition key. After a few tries it starts normally. Thanks for any help with this one.

Hello,

Here are a couple possibilities.

Dead/weak spot in windings inside starter.

Bad Ground

Corroded cables

To test for bad ground you can take a set of jumper cables and connect end to the negative terminal and the other to a good ground. Then try starting if starts normally then you have a ground problem, and will need to either remove and clean both ends of negative cable and the grounding point on the engine or just replace the negative cable.

If still acting the same would recommend remove the starter and have it test.
