I am getting my air compressor replaced in my car but was not sure of how many cans of refrigerant to buy. How much do you think is needed. I asked someone and they told me about about 4 or 5 pounds but what does that mean. How many cans?

There's a silver sticker under the hood. 3 pounds (cans) is common, more if you have rear AC.

Are you aware you can't just dump in refrigerant and expect no problems? Professionals will pump the system into a vacuum for at least a half hour before adding refrigerant. This causes water in the system to boil at 77 degrees and get sucked out. Moisture in the system will form corrosive byproducts that destroy metal parts. The receiver / drier should also be replaced any time the sealed system is opened for service.

There was oil in the old compressor. It must be dumped out and measured, then an equal amount of new oil must be added to the new compressor before it is installed. Your mechanic will also check for contaminants from someone adding anything other than R-134. Other refrigerants will contaminate his recovery and recycling equipment as well as the tank of recovered R-134.
