No, not unless you're replacing a component, so for example, if you replaced the compressor, you would drain all the oil out of the old compressor, measure that amount, and add exactly the same amount you took out. The oil doesn't leak out like freon. It stays in the lower sections of components because it's not in a gas state like refrigerant is at some points. So don't worry about it. Just add some refrigerant. Keep an eye on that pressure vs temperature chart I posted up top. Since you're not adding per weight in this case. You'll be good. I just prefer tp vacuum the system down because it removes air and any moisture.

Thanks. I just heard that adding an ounce or two of pag oil will quiet down a noisy compressor and make it last longer.

There doesn't seem to be, but I will look closer. It's just that the compressor makes a buzzing noise upon acceleration, it did it since new but after 10 years and 10,000 miles it still hasn't imploded. I suspect my mechanic when first charging the system with the new compressor maybe didn't rotate the pully at least 4 rotations to burnish the compressor cylinders. I think he added the oil to the compressor and accumulator. He was kind of a hack mechanic, but I live in a small town. Isn't there a special small cotton plug I can buy to press on the low pressure schrader to check for oil?
