i would first try jumping the car with a fresh battery to rule out just a weak cell in one of yours, you can also run a wire from the positive on a seperate car to the starter solenoid which will bypass the ignition system, to see if it is again a weak battery and if it still does the same then yes i would look into working on the starter

Suggested Repair

Jump-start with a known-good battery first. If needed, apply power from a donor battery positive terminal to the starter solenoid to bypass the ignition and distinguish a weak battery from a starter fault. If the no-crank condition remains, inspect or replace the starter.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1999 Oldsmobile Bravada with 244,000 miles reports that turning the key does nothing, the key locks and must be released with the safety switch, and the solenoid clicks. The owner suspects the starter solenoid. The expert recommends ruling out a weak battery by jump-starting and by powering the starter solenoid directly before working on the starter. The question about why the key locks was not answered.
