The car will sit and idle but when you put it in gear forward or reverse it will shut off.

Does the engine accelerate in park/neutral as normal? No hesitation etc? One item to check is if the Torque Convertor clutch is locked up. If so, it would be like dumping the clutch on a manual transmission car.
