Oil on crankshaft sensor

I changed my crankshaft sensor and it was covered in oil but the starting motor seems to spin.

I do not have any information on this motor, you can have a sensor that reads off the drive plate and will be dry, or one that reads off the crank shaft and this will be wet. what exactly is the problem and why did you remove the sensor?
