We have had our car diagnosed with oil pump failure, the bolt came loose on the pulley causing the pump to fail, we drove the car around 10 miles in which time the oil light went from flickering to staying on and a grinding noise (coming from oil pump) went from quiet to really loud. I just wanted to know if this would have caused engine damage and there is any point in repairing it, as a mechanic at a garage said theyre could be other issues caused by starving the engine of oil. How would we know if to repair or not thanks

The oil light coming on is an indication of low or no oil pressure, with no oil pressure all internal engine components are not lubricated and you have probably done very serious damage, I would be expecting that the engine is beyond economical recovery.

Thanks for answering my question, is there any particular way we could tell if the engine has been seriously damaged without obviously changing the oil pump first? Thanks again

You will have to drop the sump and inspect main crankshaft and big end bearings, the condition of these will give the best indication, you will not be able to judge piston damage as the engine will have to be fully dismantled to view this.
