1991 Nissan Transmission

My brother has a 1991 nissan that I am thinking of buying. One problem he has is that when the car is cold it will not shift into overdrive until it warms up real good. Could you tell me what this might be. He said it has been this way for several years. Is there something that will fix the problem? It's a 3.0 with automatitic transmission.

I recently bought a 87 nissan pulsar nx, 153,000 k. The car runs mint and shifts fine until the end of 3rd gear. It feels like it wants to shift into 4th but wont. I had to drive 200 km on the freeway lastnight and was only going 100km/h at 4000 rpm for about half an hour. What could be the problem.(Im guessing the Torque Converter or coolant sensor) but truly have no idea. I have never hit 4th gear so the car not being warm isnt a factor.
