Most Nissan vehicles have a drain plug on the trans pan. Jack up the vehicle, put a drain pan under the trans pan (NOT THE OIL PAN), and remove the drain plug.

If your model does not have a drain plug, loosen (DO NOT remove) the lowest four bolts on the trans pan (usually the ones in the back). Slowly tap the pan with a rubber mallet to break loose the gasket and let the fluid drain.

Once it stops, loosen a few bolts at a time (always the lowest) until every bolt is removed. You may have to tap the pan again to break it free. You should be able to see the filter now. In most cases, the filter is held in place with one screw and an o-ring on the fluid pick up.

I have removed the transmission pan, but the filter has a bolt that is inserted from above. It cannot be removed from underneath that I can tell.
