Disclaimer: I am not certified and I am in no way a pro. These are just my thoughts.
Well... I do not know too much about sticks, but if it were an automatic I guess I would try these few things.
Make sure the ing. fuse/fuseable link isn't blown.
In an automatic they need to be in park our Neutral to start.... so I would have someone move the gear selector while I looked on the transmission to make sure it was actually shifting and not broken or popped off. Make sure connections were tight on the starter and battery.
