Are mufflers model/make specific, or is it pretty much whatever fits the pipe will do the job?

If you're trying to go the cheap way or slapping on a turbo type just make sure you have the clearance to fit it-pretty much like you said. Othewise you'll be needing Midas Muffler for fabrication
