Occassionally when I turn the key the dash lights up but nothing else happens. If I turn the key a few more times the car eventually starts with no problem at all. I can go months with this never happening and then sometimes it will happen frequently for a little while and then stop again. I replaced the starter, but that didn't help.

Thanks for your help.

Problem is most likely the ignition switch of the neutral safety switch. Next time it wont start try putting car in neutral and see if it will start, if it does then replace neutral safety switch

Does that apply to my manual transmission? I'm not sure how to put it in Neutral. Do I just leave it out of gear and not depress the clutch? Depress the clutch? Does your comment relate to an automatic transmission?

Thanks,
Harrison

Sorry. You dont have a neutral safety switch but even easier is the clutch safety switch. Just above the clutch pedal under the dash will be a plunger type switch that pops out when clutch is released and is pushed in when the clutch is depressed. This switch prevents the car from starting without pressing the clutch. Check this switch, you can run a jumper across the 2 wires in the switch connector to bypass it and see if that fixes your problem and if it does then replace switch
