This morning I could not start my car. I had my boyfriend hold the starter cord up while I turned the key and the car started manually. Obviously, the starter cable needs to be tightened or something. Is this something we can do ourselves? How? Thanks!

Here are some things to check. Load test the battery. Check that the battery cable connections are clean. Check for 12 volts to starter solenoid with the key in the start position. These things should be checked first then the ignition switch, neutral safety switch, starter and starter solenoid. One of these may be faulty.

Suggested Repair

Load-test the battery and clean the battery cable connections. With the key in start, confirm 12 volts at the starter solenoid. If those are good, check the ignition switch, neutral safety switch, starter, and starter solenoid.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 2000 Nissan 240SX could not start the car until the starter cable was held while the key was turned, and asked whether the cable only needed tightening. The expert recommended first load-testing the battery, cleaning the battery cable connections, and checking for 12 volts at the starter solenoid in the start position, then checking the ignition switch, neutral safety switch, starter, and starter solenoid.
