Transsmission leak

I have a 1996 mitsubishi gallant with 155,000 miles on a 2.4 liter. The problem is when I park it, it loses about 2-3 quarts of transmission fluid over 1-2 month time. Could it be the gasket or the pan? Does the fluid sit below the gasket line when it is parked level?
