I have a 98 mercury villager with 123,000 miles on it and it runs great however it has developed a break light problem that I am stumped on what is causing it. When I press the break pedal the third light above the liftgate is the only break light that comes on. I have checked the bulbs and fuses and those are all ok. I thought about replacing the break switch but since the third light comes on wouldn't that mean the switch is ok? I don't know what else I should do so please help me. Thank you

The third brake light does operate off of the same swicht so you are correct to think the switch is good. Check the things that the other two light have in common like a wiring harness or they may share the same ground.
Hope this helps

Just to let ya know I ended up replacing both brake lights. This fixed the problem, however I didn't buy the ¢.96 bulbs I went with the 3 dollar ones and hopefully they last longer than 6 months. Thanks for all of your help
