The car would not start, did not hear the fuel pump running, pushed the car backwards in order to tow decided to try to start one more time. The car started the first time I hit the key. This is the second time the car has done this in the last 2 weeks. What could be the problem

A prime suspect would be the fuel pump relay. Also, you could have an intermittent fuel pump. You can isolate the problem by checking for voltage at the fuel pump inertia switch during one of the "no start" episodes. No voltage would indicate a bad relay, while if voltage is present, the pump is failing.
