My daughter is looking at a 2000 Mercury Cougar. It's a four cylinder with 102,000 on it. The seller (a used car dealer) wants $2,500 for it. The car is in great shape, and it should fetch twice that much, according to Kelly BB. The seller says that the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. Actually, I'm told that the Cougar has two of them. We have recieved and estimate to replace the converters for about $700. I'm concerned that there may be more wrong with the car, even though the Carfax VIN checks out fine. Could a clogged cat converter cause damage to the engine? If so, how likely is that to have happened? We will be grateful for your advice. Joe Shinnick

I bought my car new in 2000. I was having problems with my car where it was hit or miss with starting my car. I was told it was my cat converter. Come to find out it was my fuel pump which intern was recalled by Ford in 2004.

I had shelled out $3,000 in repairs in 2005 and it seems to be in the shop at least once ever 6 months for major repairs. If you have deep pockets this is a car to keep otherwise I would suggest unloading it as soon as possible. I still own my car unfortunately, but I do wish you the best of luck with yours.

Thanks, Bruhaha. We will steer clear of the Cougar. I'm sorry that you are stuck with one. J.S.

Don't buy it. I bought mine in 2004 a 2001. They have a lot of issues especially lousy suspension. I'd never buy another one.
