2002 5spd Mazda Protege 5 Hatchback, 90,000km.

Every morning after a cold night regardless if the car warms up in the morning for 5-10 minutes, the front of the car will make a high pitched squealing sound when it is in reverse and in 1st gear. The noise does NOT occur during idling. Once you change to 2nd gear the sound goes away. Got 2 belts replaced - noise went away for 3 days but now back again. If the car has been driven and you start it up again there will be no squealing noise. Seems only after prolonged time outside in the cold. This squealing noise could easily wake up the neighbours 2kms away! Any suggestions?

I hate to say this, but makybe the belts are loose and were never tightened properly. The serpintine belts on the Protege's have to be tightened till you think they are gonna break. Then a bit more. The aftermarket belts tend to stretch and squeal.

Chek to see if the squeal is coming from the belt area at the front of the motor.

@ a_l_m: I have the same problems with a horrendous squealing sound from my belts. I've had it to the mechanic, several times for the same problem. I've tried 3 different serp belts, and asked them to tighten the belt after it loosens up. It's now winter again, and the squealing is worse than ever. The sound started around 90K, and has continued to current 108K. This problem doesn't occur in the summer when overnight temps are around 50-60.
