1993 Mazda MPV Wont start

For a while our car would not start, no lights or anything worked then we were told it was the altenator. We got one and it worked for a day but now the head lights work but the dash lights dont come on and the car wont even start. It makes no noise like its trying at all just nothing.
Any ideas what it may be?
