Hi there
I have mazda 626 1998 LX 4 cylinders automatic, 4 doors sedan with little over 118,000 miles on it.I recently was driving when car lost power an was moving slowely.I was trying to accelerate the speed pressing the gas pedale, but the engine was making lot of noise and car was still moving slowely. When I stopped I was trying to start moving again, but I couldn't.I tried changing geers from P to D or R but car didnt move.I turned it off and start the engine again. After I switched geers from P to D, I was able to drive for about a block and car was moving slowely about 20 mph.I tried to speed up and same problems occured. After parking on the side of the road, I was trying to change from D to P and back to D, but the car wasn't moving.I checked The fluids and they were in good condition, cause they were changed few months ago.
I was told I might need to change a whole transmission and estimate is about over 1000, 00 dollars.
I would appreciate if you could tell me what could be wrong and if there is anything else that might be a problem?>>>

Thank you

Hi there,

Modern auto transmissions are very complex devices, if as you say you have no drive, or minimal at best it sounds terminal. Best thing to do at this stage is to remove the transmission oil pan and check for excess metal in the pan, if so bad sign sorry, is the oil bright coloured or a dull brown and smells off? If so more bad news. As far as fixing there beasts, there is no short cuts, you re build the entire transmission or fit a chang over unit, Second hand at your peril as you have no idea as to that it's like untill you drive it. Best let a transmission specialist guide you and don't be afraid to get a second opinion, after all it's your money.
