My engine light came on and I brought it to a mechanic.

They did their diagnostic test and the code was either 412 or 421 (?). Said one showed a problem with the oxygen sensor and the other one was the catalytic converter and he said there is a huge difference in price. How can I know if he tells me it is the catalytic converter it really is?

Getting the codes and diagnosing are not the same. Getting the codes is the very tip of the iceberg. One may be causing the other. Converters are warrantied 8yr/80,000mi. Take to to a shop that actually will diagnose what is needed.
