Blame it on the engineers. You most likely have an electric solenoid that releases the shift lever. It never occurred to them a battery could run dead.
What I would try first is to use a "maintenance" charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter or power jack. Let that charge the battery overnight. That will allow the shifter release to work and may be enough to start the engine. For those to work, your outlet must work with the ignition switch off so current can go backward to the battery.
