1994 Lincoln Mark VIII engine coolant

The temp gauge on my mark 8 pegged on me the other day. Now the last 2 times ive gottebn into it it overheated. Its not loosing any coolant the heater isnt working, sometimes I can drive 2miles and itll get hot, the laST 2 TIMES IT LET ME GO 10 MILES OR SO, WHAT HOULD I BE CHECKING

Check for a bad thermostat, feel upper radiator hose, does it get hot? When was the last flush and fill? Coolant does loose it capabilties after a few years! Also check the cooling fan operation.
