Engine Mechanical problem
1999 Kia Sportage Four Wheel Drive Automatic 106000 miles

I have a 99 Kia Sportage. It wouldn't start reliably, but when the relays were tapped on while someone tried to start it, it would start. My father in law is a mechanic, so he said the logical choice was to replace the relays. After that was done, the Kia wouldn't start at all. He began digging and somehow determined that the fuel relay system and the fuel line both needed replaced, so we bought the parts and he fixed that. Tonight, he put everything back together and the Kia was getting much better fuel pressure and was expected to start. Of course it didn't. I'm at a complete loss and he now thinks that it may have something to do with the crankshaft sensor, but I do not want to continue to pay for parts that may or may not be necessary to get the vehicle to just run at this point. The person driving the vehicle knew it was old and was happy just to have a vehicle that would get them where they wanted to go even if it did cause a big of a hassle, but at in trying to make it better it seems that we don't even have a vehicle that runs anymore. Please help.

If its not one thing its another-Okay do below for a start to determine if its compression/fuel/or spark related issue and get back with some results, so that I can continue to assist you.

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine atleast 3/16 away from ground-have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure tester designed for your fuel system to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pick-up strainer/fuel pump/pressure regulator and also listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light and see if it flashing-Depends on what type ignition system is yours, No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, camshaft and crankshaft position sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply to your vehicle disregard it meaning if it doesn't come with one ignore it and keep testing

Thank you so much. I will take this to my step dad and have him go through the trouble shooting and get back with you. I do know that the fuel sending system, fuel line, and fuel pump are all brand new. He said it was getting the fuel pressure. And still thinks it's the crankshaft sensor but wants to do some more checking. I will get back as soon as possible with his findings. Thanks again

Ok So we changed the crankshaft sensor. He thinks it will start now. But it won't. He hooked up a better computer to the vehicle and found out that the computer has timed itself out now and won't allow the car to start. He described it to me as the car thinking someone is trying to steal it. How do we get the computer to un-time out for lack of better words.

If its cranking over and will not start -start by checking for ignition spark and the correct fuel pressure and also if the injectors are pulsing providing fuel into the cylinders.

Injectors not firing. 2 dealers and like 6 mechanics have said to change the EGI (or ECU) in it. So that's the direction we're heading. But everything else has checked out. Except the injectors aren't getting the signal to fire.
