the headlights on my 2001 grand cherokee laredo have gotten very cloudy. i found some new replacements very cheap. my problem is that i cannot access the wire connectors to remove the old lights. the plug is below a metal plate under the lights and seems to be attached to something. how do i reach this connector to remove/replace the light assembly? the car has 84000 miles and the in-line six.

If you can get the assembly loose, and pulled away enough, you should be able to get the connectors off. Sometimes it is more practical to remove a component and THEN unplug it, just because of location.

If all else fails, you may have to come up from the inner fender well (remove the inner plastic) or between the bumper and radiator. Be prepaired to get your hand in some TIGHT places in there.
