Electrical problem
1996 Jeep Cherokee Automatic

My sons' car will not start. No power to radio, lights, anything. Used car, but battery appears to be new. How can I tell if it's alternator or battery? I have no meter, nor can I get the car anywhere.

Some of the national brand autostores will make house calls, call them. If the vehicle needs the battery replaced, they will replace on the spot. It's hard to do any testing without basic tools. Some discount stores will sell digital multimeter for around 20 bucks, better than nothing. Some places won't use jumper cables anymore because of liability issues. Some vehicle systems don't like voltage spikes.

You can take the battery off and take it to the store, they will test it.
