My truck all of a sudden started turning off when I stop at a light. The revolutions go all the way to 0 and the car stops. It starts back up fine but I need to keep it accelerated while pressing the break pedal so that it wont turn off.

Inspect and test the idle air control valve, EGR valve and throttle position sensor-Could be clogged fuel filter too.

This guide can help

Vehicle listed above is the Sport model. In the mornings, especially wet ones, my vehicle starts but then idles really low, revs itself back up, repeat. When that stops I try to put it in reverse but it shuts off. I can restart it but will shut off as soon as you put it in gear. Once you do that a few times you can drive, although every couple weeks it revs up and down while at a stop. Boy does it look funny, kind of is but help, lol. I replaced the MAS, spark plugs, fuel filter, hasn't made a difference.

It sounds like you have a vacuum leak or the throttle bore needs to be serviced. These guides will help us fix it:

Transmission problem
1999 Isuzu Rodeo Question Four Wheel Drive Manual 165, 00 miles

Hey 2 car pros.

I'm having trouble keeping my idle rpm steady and as I drive the car 50+ mile distances, when I come to a stop the RPMs ride really low, near stalling, and often stall as I'm coming to a stop. The car sometimes lunges when driving, and these problems sometimes seem related, because it's usually after the lunging begins that the car will stall when it comes to a stop.

I have replaced or done the following:
MAF, Idle Control Valve, Cleaned the Throttle body, PCV, and replaced the throttle position sensor.

And after each fix, the car runs well for a while, but ultimately the stalling beings again.

Last night after driving 8+ hrs as part of a trip from Denver to Austin, when coming to a stop, the car began its subtle lunging and then stalled out. I was still probably going 10 or so MPH. So I turned the engine off while it was rolling (but still stalled out) and the car gave a large grinding noise underneath the car, as it would if gears were coming to a stop very roughly. The car ran very rough for the next 20 miles, where we came to a stop for the night, with a lot of lunging. In the morning, I took it to the only Lube place open in town, asked them to check the level of the Transmission fluid. They said it was fine, but I'm not all that trusting. I also changed the oil.

Car ran great back to Austin the final 1.5 hrs. But I know this problem will return, as it has for the last 8 months.

Is the stalling related to the lunging and the grinding?
What is likely the grinding I heard?
Suggestions?

Thanks
Chris

Hi ChrisBrecht,

Thank you for the donation.

When vehicle is rolling and ignition is turned off, the transmission can emit a grinding noise if the transmission is in gear with clutch depressed. I believe that is the grinding noise you heard.

Since stalling occurs only after running for extended periods, there are 2 things that might cause it.

1. Valve clearance. If the valve clearances are too tight, the idling would be unstable and might cause stalling. Get them checked/adjusted.

2. IAC. Check the coolant hoses to the IAC for clogging. If hoses are clogged, the IAC thermal valve does not work correctly resulting in erratic idling and/or stalling.

If the engine is properly tunes, getting proper fuel pressure, there are no vacuum leaks. Chances are it is the idle air control valve. That is what is responsible for maintaining idle speed.

After thought. Make sure the throttle plate is clean and not carboned up in the throttle body.
