Ignition/Key Cylinder?

The key to the car will only turn from ACC to On but won’t go to the off and locked position. I unplugged the battery and was able to turn it to the off position but then it wouldn’t turn at all. I checked the ignition switch and the lock and key mechanism itself and there are no issues. I’m unsure of where to go from here. Thanks!

Hi,

When the key wouldn't turn off, were you able to place the transmission fully in park? Also, and don't laugh, are the brake lights working properly?

If the transmission isn't fully in park, a sensor provides voltage to the Key Interlock Solenoid. The solenoid is then energized, which prevents the Ignition Switch from being turned to lock.

One more thing, is the key being fully inserted into the lock cylinder? I've had issues with higher mileage Accords where the tumbler was worn to a point that the key wasn't fully inserted. If you have a different key, try that first.

Let me know.

Take care,

joe

The brake lights do work, the car is in park, and the key fits all the way in. I think the part that the ignition switch fits into doesn’t turn smoothly or is jammed somehow.

Hi,

There are fuses that are tied to the ignition switch that can prevent it from locking fully. I don't think they would prevent it from turning, but anything is possible.

In the interior fuse box, there is a 7.5-amp fuse, number 21. Check to make sure the fuse is good and there is power to and from it.

Also, let me know if this happened all at once or if you have noticed problems in the past.

Let me know what you find.

Joe
