Hi

For the last few weeks I have been noticing that my engine oil pressure gets low, runs fine for a week after the re-filling. There are no visible oil leaks spots under the car. I get my oil change done at Jiffy Lubes and they suggested that I might need new rear main seal or oil pan gasket. They are not sure. I am surprised that there are no visble oil spots under the car or on the gaskets. Could it be that oil is being consumed by the engine. I could smell a litle oil today morning when I started the car. but I donot know if that could be due to a cold start. As the smell subsided lately and there is no visible smoke coming out.

Any pointers are welcome.

It is being burned by the engine. Have you pulled a plug and looked at it. It could be a little oily and probably black in color. It may just be one cylinder or more. You are probably heading towards an overhaul.

Suggested Repair

Oil is being burned inside the engine rather than leaking externally. Pull the spark plugs and inspect them; oily, black deposits on one or more plugs support internal oil consumption. An engine overhaul is likely if that inspection confirms burning oil.

Conversation Summary

A Honda owner reports low oil pressure that returns for about a week after refill, with no visible leaks under the car or on the gaskets. A shop suggested a rear main seal or oil pan gasket but was unsure. A brief oil smell on a cold start faded and there was no visible smoke. The expert said the engine is burning the oil, advised pulling a spark plug to check for oily black deposits on one or more cylinders, and indicated an overhaul is likely.
