I am about to purchase a 1997 with only 98,000 but the sales guy was honest and up front saying that the differential is shot and needs to be replaced. Claims that this is a normal thing that occurs with this make and model, and once changed everything will be fine. I need to know if this is true since I have never owned a Honda or know anyone that does. Feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

yes its not an uncommon problem on a crv that wasn't cared for properly. makes me wonder about the rest of the vehicle. the rear diff fluid on these needs to be changed often (every 15k imo) and with the correct honda fluid.

i would try changing the fluid 1st.
