my honda civic keeps losing power and dying. my question is what is going on? i am thinking it is the carburetor or the fuel pump by the gas tank but am not sure. the car takes like 5 mins to start up then when i take off it will die every 500 yards or so. it likes to die when going up a hill and sometimes when i am on flat road. please help

does it sputter??... try first replacing the fuel filter, then i would suggest doing a fuel pressure test to see if your pump is good... good luck

A couple of good points to check are the plug wires which can be kind of finicky. Then I would also look at the timing of the vehicle.

Suggested Repair

Replace the fuel filter first, then perform a fuel pressure test to check the fuel pump. Also inspect the spark plug wires and verify ignition timing.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1986 Honda Civic reports hard starting, loss of power, stalling about every 500 yards, dying on hills and sometimes on flat roads, occasional backfiring, and downshifting before it dies. Experts suggest starting with a fuel filter replacement and a fuel pressure test, then checking the plug wires and ignition timing.
