My engine light? Came on and you were very kind to suggest a tune up. The mechanic called me and said that I also need a distributor (electrical component)? Does this sound right?

Well this is a very common problem.

If your vehicle is stalling or running really rough it may be caused by a non-serviceable sensor that has failed inside the distributor.

Are you sure its the whole assembly? Or is it just a distributor cap and rotor? These are common tune-up items. A distributor is not a common 'tune-up' item.

Yes, the whole assembly, he put a new one (including the cap). I had the dist cap replaced last april it had cracked? And the car had problems starting. Now it was the assembly? I had never had to change the assembly before. It is running better now, he did a tune up, oil change, pcv valve, fuel/air filter, tune-up for $720.00 I also have an oil leak that was supposedly fixed last year but the midas mechanic did not do a good job? I took it back to him two wks later for the same problem and he put some sort of sealant around the pan gasket. Now, this other mechanic saids that you put a gasket or sealant(not both) and that its leaking again because they tightened it to hard?

What you are telling me all sounds correct in my opinion. It does not assume that you got ripped off whatsoever. Unless of course the mechanic is lying to you.

But the oil pan gasket is a common leaking area on these cars, and distributors do fail quite often.
