Disconnecting the battery is not a good idea it causes the computer to lose some of its memory data

Try below for the computer to relearn itself

Before you do any diagnostic, you need to start with a good, fully charged battery. Have the battery fully charged using a battery charger, not your alternator. Most auto part store will charge your battery for free.

If you are driving long distances (giving the battery time to charge) and it still doesn't start, it could be a bad battery or alternator.

Most corner auto stores can check for both in a matter of 5 minutes.

I have had an intermittent but consistent problem with the battery dying. When I jump it the car will start and run fine, the lights appear to be fine, the power windows and locks work but when I turn the car off and let it sit for a couple hours (if you try to start it rite after turning it off it will start) and try to start it - its completely or nearly completely dead? The first time it happened I had a mechanic look at it and he said it was a bad connection and ground and that the alternator checked good. He said that he tightened everything and cleaned the connectors. This seemed to work for awhile and then it happened again stranding me in the walmart parking lot. After a jump charge it started but the lights seemed to dim as well as the interior lights, I turned the car off and it would not start back up. To me it seemed like an alternator problem but the mechanic said it checked good? At that point I had the battery replaced as well as the cables and connectors. Again this seemed to solve the problem but turned out to be only temporarily as it has happened again! I jumped it, it started, ran fine, lights worked, turned it off & immediately tried starting it agian and it started rite up but after sitting for about 3 hours I tried to start it and it was completely dead! What could possibly be wrong? Is it the alternator failing, fuses, the grounding wire? Help please! Thanks!

Hi there,

You will need to have a current draw test done, this will show any drain on the battery from a faulty relay are a faulty diode in the alternator, your mechanic should know how to do this test, if not re post and I will advise the procedure.

Car has existing need for intake gasket and carb base gasket (I am told), but have been driving it until recently when it quit after the lights and radio dying down, the car died. Was told both Alt. And Batt. Would need replace.
I bought a new battery and drove it a little. Seemed to run well. Question is: can I nurse this along if I buy a battery charger and plug it in overnight? Will I risk losing the new battery? How do I know if the alt. Needs replace?
Thank you!

Get a volt meter and hook it up to the battery-positive to positive-negative to negative. Record the reading, it better be 12.4volts or better. If not, recharge the battery till you get up to 12.4volts or better. If not, load test the battery then comeback.

1993 Honda Accord. This car sits alot but is started up
every other day. One day the car would not start.
Battery checked bad so I purchased a new battery.
2 months later same thing. The new battery checked
bad so I got free replacement battery. About another
two months, same thing, all at once the battery was dead and checked "Bad", This has now happened again for the 4th time in seven months. The dealer will not
replace the battery again so I need to know what is going on. If the battery was being drained then why do these new batteries all check "BAD"? I would think you could just charge the battery but the test says all of these new batteries tested "BAD". Thank you.

How long do you let it run when you start it? Just starting a car does nothing more than take more away from the battery, vehicle needs to be driven for a few miles to get the battery back up to charge. Have you had the alternator tested?

I drive the Honda every other day, its runs about
10 minutes. What my real question was.

Why are these batteries all testing "BAD". These are all
new batteries. If the battery test bad, I assume that
one or more of the cells is just so old that charging
the battery will not restore the battery. This can not be true with four new batteries involved so something about the car must be causing all of these batteries
to go bad, but what? If something was draining the
battery down over time, would this make the battery bad?--Why can't you just recharge the battery?

Might I ask what brand of batteries? And I understood your question, just trying to clarify things. Have you had the alt checked? Sometimes if they go bad they can draw a battery down to nothing pretty fast
