1988 Honda Accord Manual

Hi,

I have a question about a voltage regulator.

I have an '88 Honda Accord 2.0L which the alternator
on it is running at 65 Amps, but I have an alternator
off of a '90 Toyota Supra 3.0L runs at 70 Amps.

(Or I should say the voltage regulators are 65/70 A)

Now I believe I need to change the voltage regulator because the first time I start it up in
the morning - no battery light, but then when
I go to start it up for the second time and
every time after that during the day - battery light

If I rev it up to 3,000 RPM's or more
the light flickers/goes out at 3,500.

Can I replace the 65 Amp with a 70 Amp?

Do you believe that is my problem?

Thanks!

Hi HondasRule,

You can increase the alternator output by increasing the capacity of the alternator.

You are correct about the alternator being faulty.

Hi, and thanks for answering.

I am wondering though, if I just
change the voltage regulator on
it from 65 Amps to 70 Amps?

It that bad? Will it make the alternator work harder?
Will it heat up and make other things screw up?

Hi HondasRule,

Should be no problem as long as the voltage regulator is working correctly. In fact a higher output would make the alternator work less but it requires more power to work so it evens out the advantages and disadvantages.
