Gentlemen:

'87 Accord engine, only has an original 110,000 miles not too bad. Small cylinder engine. A couple times it overheated due to a bad thermostat. However, I noticed losing some cooling fluids. Replaced fluids, but noticed a day later the oil level was higher and the radiator had emulsified product inside. Blown Head gasket. OK, question. Looking at the schematics, removing the exhaust manifold bolts, cover, accessories and slipping off the timing belt, do I have to completely dissassemble the head? I don't think so, but I have to ask. Thank you for your assistance :D

Hi there,

Oh if it was just that simple. You will have to remove and strip the head, (not Valves) the head will have to be crack tested, checked for warpage, pressure tested and at least re machined. Alloy heads do warp and to just replace the head gasket is fraught with danger. If you don't do the job properly you will stand an excellent chance of doing it again very soon. Also check thermostat, hoses, clean radiator and not just with a hose as the oil deposits will not be removed. If the timing belt has not been changed do it as well, and make sure that the block surface is scrupulously clean, any old gasket left on it will be a disaster. Make sure all bolt torques are correct, take your time and do a good job and you will not have to worry about it for some time.
