Experiencing a really hard brake pedal?

Recently I’ve had a slightly low brake pedal but now I’m experiencing a really hard brake pedal that comes and goes. I think that I also hear an air sound when I release pressure on the pedal.
Can you steer me in how to diagnose the most likely cause?
