Inspect the parking brake warning switch that contacts the console- or dash-mounted parking brake lever. With the lever fully released, confirm the switch touches the brake arm. If the switch has slipped out of its housing, gently press it back into place. If that does not correct the light, the expert suggested black tape as a temporary way to hold the switch in position.
A 1999 Toyota 4Runner owner reported that the emergency brake warning light stayed on with the brake released, sometimes went out after driving, and could return after a bump or curve. Another owner reported the same issue on a 1997 model. The expert explained that Toyotas use a switch contacting the console- or dash-mounted parking brake lever and recommended checking that contact, reseating the switch if it slipped out of its housing, or using black tape if needed.
