If I do not turn on the headlights when starting my 2000 Z71 the tow/haul will not turn off and the E brake light will flash. Also none of the dome lights will work unless the the headlights are on. I will drive it like this for 4 days or so and then occasionally the truck will just start and die. The Security light flashes sometimes and once I take the battery cables off and put back on it will start. I know that the ignition had been tampered with but I replaced it and still had the problems. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi:
Your problem with the head lights seems to deal with a short in the steering column, but the engine shuting down may deal with the security system. If the security light is flashing, the ignition isn't recognizing the key, thus shuting the engine off. When you disconnect the battery, it resets itself allowing it to start. If I am correct, this will only happen a set number of times before it won't restart. I recommend having the security sensor in both the key and ignition checked by a GM dealer who will have the correct test equipment.
