2000 GMC Sierra sometimes starts sometimes does not

I have a 2000 gmc sierra z71 and about half the time I try to start it, it does nothing at all. Almost like you are trying to start it in drive. Then all of a sudden, without doing anything it will start. Can someone please help?

When this happens, have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check for power to the smaller wire on the starter. If you have 12+ volts, then the starter most likely is bad. If it isn't getting power, check the neutral safety switch, and the starter relay.
