This is directly out of the repair manual.
"Be certain to observe correct polarity connections. Failure to do so will result in almost immediate computer, alternator and regulator destruction. Never allow the jumper cable ends to touch each other."

It could also cook the starter. A lot to check. Start with the main ignition fuse. Then with the starter. If you do get it running take it to have the alternator tested.

Suggested Repair

Check the main ignition fuse first, then the starter. Reversed jumper cables can destroy the computer, alternator, and regulator and may also damage the starter. If the engine runs, have the alternator tested.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1984 GMC S15 said the vehicle would not turn over after a jump with briefly reversed cables, a short start, and a stall. The battery still sparks, and the starter was replaced recently. The expert warned that reverse polarity can destroy the computer, alternator, and regulator and may damage the starter, and advised checking the main ignition fuse, then the starter, and testing the alternator if it runs.
