My friend has a 95 Grand Am GT, and I'm trying to put in a CD player for her. She didn't buy the wiring harness, so I'm hooking it up to the factory wiring harness. My problem is that the color wires I need, I can't find. I also dont have constant power. It comes in spurts, and the speakers only work when the wires are held a certain way. Any suggestions?

Should have bought the harness for $20. Should never cut the factor harness as the wires degrade with age and connections often suffer.

1 Front Left - [Light Gray]
2 Front Left + [Tan]
3 Front Right - [Light Green]
4 Front Right + [Dark Green]
5 Ground [Black]
6 Illumination + [Not Used]
7 Dimmer [Gray]
8 Antenna Trigger [Pink (If Available)]
9 Switched (Ignition) + 12 volts [Yellow*]
10 Constant (Battery) +12 volts [Orange]
11 Rear Right - [Light Blue]
12 Rear Right + [Dark Blue]
13 Rear Left - [Yellow*]
14 Rear Left + [Brown]

*Most common mistakes are using the wrong yellow wire for power.

Suggested Repair

Buy a vehicle-specific aftermarket wiring harness instead of cutting or splicing the factory harness. Aged factory wires often make unreliable connections. Use orange for constant 12V, the correct yellow for switched ignition 12V, and black for ground, and do not confuse the switched-power yellow with the rear-left negative yellow.

Conversation Summary

The owner is installing an aftermarket CD player in a 1995 Grand Am GT without a wiring harness and cannot find the needed wire colors. Constant power comes and goes, and the speakers only work when the wires are held a certain way. The expert recommends buying a harness, not cutting the factory harness, and matching the listed wire colors, especially avoiding the wrong yellow wire for power.
