83 GMC? Please Help

I have a 1983 GMC pickup miles are HIGH. It will run fine for weeks sometime months but then it will die while I am idling or even driving sometimes it will start back up right away but sometime it takes a day. Last time it happened it would start and run then when I put it in any gear it cut out. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be, besides that its OLD. ?

Okee dokee. Sounds like you need a new coil and replace your voltage regulator.

When it stalles and wont start again I hit the ecm under the dash a few times and it starts and its good to go until it does it again. Sometime its good for a long time and other times just a few minutes but now I dont have to weight until the truck is ready to go.
