Checked mpg and found to be getting only seven mpg. Plugs and one coil have been changed, but no change.

I have seen where the MAF sensor stops working right causing he engine to use more fuel.

Here is a guide to help you change the sensor out:

Check out the diagrams (below).

Please let us know what happens.

Cheers

Hello MACANNON,

If you decide you would like to conduct the scan yourself here is a link to an article from this site that features written step by step instructions and pictures explaining how to do the scan yourself. Also, I have included a link to our YouTube channel with a how to video on code scanning.

This is applicable even if your check engine light is not on.

Most scanners are inexpensive to purchase, you can purchase one online from sites like Amazon.com

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

https://youtu.be/YV3TRZwer8k

Once you have the codes please get back to us with the code number(s) so that we can further assist you. We are always happy to help.

Thank you for visiting 2CarPros.com.

Kindest regards,

Renee

Oh, thank you so much for the response to my problem. I tried the suggestions without a solution, but I do plan on getting a scanner. I appreciate the links and will let you know what comes of it, thank you! What is odd, is that the car seems to be running just fine otherwise.

How did you check the mileage? For it to be running good but getting seven mpg with that engine/vehicle is not real likely. I would check real close for fuel leakage or extreme drag somewhere. What is your typical drive like? What are the rpm's in drive?

Never smell fuel, it rolls down an incline in neutral (easily). Drive is about ten miles plus, one way, freeway speed of sixty five to seventy mph and the rpm's are usually around 3,000. Manual says this model does not have a MAF sensor. But that it does have a more improved system that would have to be checked by a pro. I drive sensibly. May just have to take it for service I am trying to save money, as I am retired and do not have much of it! Car repairs and vet bills are a luxury. I did notice today that it does seem to be running a little rough. But it did pass its smog test not so long ago. Been using mid grade gas from the better stations almost all the time too.

The book may call it an air flow meter, but it is the same thing as a MAF sensor. It is bolted to the top of the air cleaner housing.
Ten mile drive is barely getting the engine warmed up, it could be running in open loop for much of that time which will negatively affect gas mileage. Then it transfers to a high load/high speed mode that also dumps extra fuel into the engine. But even then seven mpg sounds really low. Was this something that just happened or has it been getting poor mileage for the entire time you owned it?
You mention it is running rough. That could easily be the result of extra fuel being injected, to see that though you need a scan tool that can read live data, specifically the fuel trims and the AF ratio sensor signal. Those would tell you what the computer is seeing with regard to fuel flow and engine load.
