fuel-pump inertia switch: A normally closed, manually reset switch that opens if the vehicle is involved in an impact over 5 mph, or rolls over, turning off power to the fuel pump. This safety feature prevents fuel from being pumped onto the ground or hot engine components if the fuel line is ruptured or the engine dies.
