I have a 2002 Ford Windstar with 68000 and a V6. The ac does not get very cold. I checked the refrigerant level and it was good at about 27psi but noticed that the compressor would go on for about 5 seconds and than turn off for about 5 seconds and than turn on for 5 and than off for 5 and so on. Is this normal?

27 PSI for R-134a is a little low. Your suction pressure should be about 35-40. It looks like you are cycling on low pressure.

CAUTION. Working with refrigerants can be dangerous if you are inexperienced. If you are inexperienced, get professoinal help. You are also required to have a licence to work with refirgerants.

If I helped, let me know.

Good luck.

If you happen to solve the problem please post what you found.

I added freon to bring up the low side pressure, however the high side still remains lower than it should at 50-100 psi. And my compressor still cycles exactly as you are explaining!

Is that the high side pressur with the car running? Try unplugging the pressure switch and jumping the 2 wires, this will force the compressor to run. Don't leave it like this! Just for testing! High side running should be about 200-250 psi low 20-40. If you get these change the pressure switch.
