This is a very common problem with this instrument cluster. You can gamble from one on Ebay for about $60 and just replace the whole cluster - or there are a couple of sites I found that will repair it for around $200
I have even seen the gears sold separately if you would like to change them yourself. I have not done it yet, but will probably try eventually.
Supposedly this is caused when you reset your trip odometer while in motion. This causes the main odometer to bind and strip the gears. But I have seen them stop working for no apparent reason too. Good luck.
