I love my car to death,
but the head gasket is on it's last legs.
What would be a fair repair quote price? Or is it worth fixing? Is this something I could do I'm my own garage with simple tools or is it better handled by a professional?

Fairly simple procedure to replacing the head gaskets, you just remove the intake manifold, accessories/lines etc. On the head, valve covers then loosen the rocker arm bolts. Rotate rocker arms from push rods. Mark push rods and rocker arm location for reassembly. Remove push rods and remove exhaust manifold. All thats left is removing the head bolts and the head will lift off. No specialty tools required so if you have a garage and mechanic tools then I say go for it. A repair shop will be around $700 for the repairs. Don't forget that the V8 has 2 heads and 2 gaskets, if replacing one then replace the other at the same time.
