Check the mass airflow sensor. The mass airflow sensor tells the computer how much air is entering the throttle body, so it can control the amount of fuel.
You can test it by running the engine and tapping on it with a plastic screwdriver handle. You can also unplug it. If it is unplugged and doesn't make a big difference, then you will need to replace the mass airflow sensor.
I once had a similar problem with a different car, and suspected the mass airflow sensor. I unplugged it, and it acted exactly like you described. In other words, there is a chance that you could unplug yours and see no difference.
