intermittent thumping noise

2006 ford taurus, 24000 miles.
there is intermittent thumping noise in rear of car.
it is not the spare tire rattling.
it occurs on smooth roads.
muffler appears to be tight.
nothing feels loose or able to rattle when i crawled under car
not constant or regular, so i guess not tire

Sounds like you have a strut or a sway bar link that has gone bad. Check both and let me know, thanks for the donation :D

ken was correct, thumping noise caused by bad strut.
fixed under warranty
